Silambarasan's buddy in Osthi

Silambarasan and Producer Ganesh cme together while filming VTV. They continue to remain good buddies and VTV Ganesh did a hilarious cameo in Vaanam. In fact, he has become a lucky mascot for STR.

VTV Ganesh will also be seen in STR's next with Dharani, Osthi. He will play Richa's sozzled dad in the film. Mahesh Manjrekar did this part in Dabangg.

The interactions between STR and VTV Ganesh's character is expected to make a great comedy track.

Vettai Mannan reminiscent of Baasha

Silambarasan's Vettai Mannan has a story that is similar to Baasha according to insiders. Like in Rajini's revenge saga, STR will become a great don following the killing of his dear friend, played by Jai. The elements of friendship, revenge, violence, and a shared philosophy are supposed to be a tribute to Baasha.
STR loved Baasha, so perhaps this is his way of paying homage to Superstar Rajini. Word has it that STR and Jai have done a good job together and the film is shaping up well.

Silambarsan’s character in Osthi is called Vel Murugan, says a source from Kollywood. The star essays the role that Salman Khan did in the original version Dabangg. To fit in the role of the cop, STR is hitting the gym and is said to be doing vigorous exercises to tone up his physique.
Osthi has Sonu Sood playing the villain while Jithan Ramesh plays Silambaransan’s brother. The film is directed by Dharani. Richa Gangpadhyay plays STR’s arm candy in Osthi. Thaman has scored the music for this flick.

Nadhiyile song review

If dad TR is on for a peppy number, son STR is here to present you with a melody.
where he brilliantly expresses the pain of a love-lorn youth. The tune and orchestration once again heavily  reminds Yuvanshankar Raja.
No complaints however as it is just an inspiration and not a copy. The big daddy of love-lyrics Na Muthukumar is also at work.

STR takes revenge for Jai

Vaanam crosses 50 day mark

Vaanam, the remake of Telugu super hit Vedam, directed by Krish, has crossed the 50-day milestone. It has set the cash registers ringing and is being touted as one of the biggest hits of the year. The multi-starrer cast of Vaanam with Silambarasan, Bharath, and Anushka must be celebrating.
STR who says he watches all of Telugu superstar Allu Arjun's films says that he knew that he had to make Vedam in Tamil and immediately made the suggestion to VTV Ganesh who agreed. And the rest as they say is history. Looks like Silambarasan's instincts were bang on this time

Vaanam Movie Review : Indiaglitz

Vaanam – Stitched well
Doing a remake involves lot of care and sensitivity. Its success lies in not reminding the audience of the original or draw comparison. ‘Vaanam’, inspired by Tollywood’s ‘Vedham’, is on the dot, courtesy director Krish’s narration and versatile performance of lead players, especially Silambarasan.
If Karthik of ‘Vinnai Thaandi Varuvaya’ worked wonders thanks to Silambarasan’s encore, his role as Cable Raja in ‘Vaanam’ goes a step further to portray his firm grip over the medium.
A combination of five stories meeting in the climax, ‘Vaanam’ is a novel attempt in Tamil cinema and Krish pulls it off well thanks to a beautifully conceived script and well-written characters. It is like reading a set of interesting short stories.
Let’s check out what these five stories are: Cable Raja (Silambarasan) is a fun-loving middle class youth. As like anyoneelse, he aspires to make it big marrying a wealthy girl.
Comes to his help are his two friends (Santhanam and VTV Ganesh) to help him make some money and take his girlfriend Pooja (Jasmine) for a party in a star hotel.
Saroja (Anushka) does the world’s oldest profession. She is in huge demand from rich people. A gold at heart, she cares for others too. Unable to put up with troubles in her profession, she decides to escape from the brothel racket. But fate intervenes and she falls into the hands of the local police and she is on the run.
Bharath (Bharath) wants to become a big rock star. When he misses the flight he plans to reach the place by road to perform a concert. But the travel brings in him a lot of change and his outlook towards life changes.
Then there is a story of Rahim (Prakash Raj) and wife Zara (Sonia Aggarwal), who are affected by communal clashes in Kovai. They lose their children and are in search of peace.
And there is a story about a poor weaver and his daughter-in-law (Saranya), who suffer at the hands of a money-lender. They come with a mission to Chennai to set their financial position right.
What happens when all these men and women meet at one point is a real twist. Krish deserves accolades for attaching human emotion and elements everywhere in all these stories.
Silambarasan easily steals the show. He is immaculate and impeccable. The actor’s mastery in handling a complex role is well. He is complimented well by Ganesh and Santhanam thanks to their humouours one-liners.
Prakash Raj is as solid as rock. His subtle emotions are noteworthy. Anushka is impressive as a commercial sex worker. Bharath looks flashy and does his best as a rock star. He plays to his strength. Vega, Saranya and ‘Kadhal’ Dhandapani are also there.
Yuvan Shankar Raja’s songs are good and the pick of the lot undoubtedly is Yevandi Unnai Peththan… which is already a chartbuster. He scores well in background score, while Anthoy’s scissors does its best to ensure momentum. Thanks to Nirav Shan who has canned every story in different light tones.
All said, there are some minor hiccups especially in the pace and tempo in few stories. However ‘Vaanam’ is no mainstream masala movie. But an attempt worth to cherish.

Vaanam Review : Behindwoods

Verdict: An intelligent fare with substance
Prolific Telugu director Krish comes to Tamil bringing with him his critically acclaimed Vedam as Vaanam with an ensemble cast of STR (Silambarasan), Bharath, Anushka, Vega, Saranya, Prakash Raj and others. Vedam had given Krish an admirable name to reckon with in the Telugu industry and for his debut in Tamil, the director has chosen the same premise which explored the various layers of human emotions, adhering largely to the original.
Vaanam follows a multi narrative format, which is fairly new to Tamil cinema. The product is about how the lives of five completely unrelated individuals from different places converge at one point cascading in a transformation of their persona and the ensuing corollary. The refreshing factor about Vaanam is it has eschewed the standard DNA of commercial flicks and Krish’s authority on the narrative comes to the fore with this delectably mounted product that tugs at your heart strings.
The characters in Vaanam are very ordinary, relatable mortals with their respective grey shades. Krish has not attempted to aggrandize them and they stand before you immaculately unornamented with their blemishes. STR as cable Raju, Bharath the rock star, Anushka the commercial sex worker, Saranya the helpless mom of an abducted son and Prakash Raj on the look out for his lost brother are the axles around which Vaanam hinges.
The screenplay is intelligently woven around these characters and Krish builds his narration in a neat pattern not losing steam or our attention anywhere. Although dialogues by Giri provide a significant value, it dazzles when Anushka insulted by policeman Radha Ravi says “we sell our souls unrobed but you guys do that with all your robes on” (naanga thuni avuthu velai porom, neenga thuniyoda velai poreenga) or when she jocularly says that while for other jobs, experience is a big plus but in flesh trade, it is just the reverse. Giri’s caliber as an effective dialogue writer is revealed when STR in a choked voice states that truth needs courage and lies do not. And mind you, Vaanam is replete with such gems.
All the artists have performed well and have equal screen presence. But the finest moments, of course, belong primarily to STR who reiterates that at the hands of a good script and a director, he can walk away with all the acting honors. The testimony to this is the scene when he snatches the money bag from Saranya and the vicissitude of emotions that play on his face that toggles between greed and conscience. And the scene at the police station when Anushka wonders if his love was true, the profound expression on his face is noteworthy.
Anushka, the foul mouthed sex worker oozing oodles of oomph meets the sensual demands of her character but sans vulgarity brings tears while pleading to the doctor to save her friend saying that she is ready to sleep with him innumerable times. Bharath delivers a subdued performance and Prakash Raj is his usual best. While Vega, Soniya and Jasmine are adequate, Saranya, Santhanam and VTV Ganesh have delivered a natural and neat portrayal. The scenes with VTV Ganesh are enjoyable and when he talks about standing in front of director Shankar’s house with Rahman as company is hilarious. Santhanam as STR’s friend is his perfect humorous foil. Anushka’s transgender friend Karpuram and Saranya’s father-in-law are impressive.
Under Yuvan Shankar Raja’s music, the opening song ‘Who am I’ showcases Bharath’s dancing skills which is youthful and peppy. The latest youth anthem ‘Evandi Onna Pethan’ is well picturized and STR’s adeptness with his feet and Nirav Shah’s brilliant camera work in the number are noticeable. Although ‘No money no honey’ is enjoyable, it does not add value to the film’s progress in any way.
Nirav Shah’s cinematography is appreciable and the angles and lighting sensibilities up the production value of the film. The different type of lighting at the lodge is just an example. With his tight frame composition, Editor Anthony is impressive.
Even though Vaanam is alluring in most aspects and travels linearly on the attempted track, the cinematic feel of the climax is a placid wart. The track ‘No money no honey’ is apparently forced and brings down the tempo of the film.
Director Krish makes his impactful debut with a different narrative format that holds the attention of the audience. Vaanam is succulent with diverse complex human emotions from deceit to greed to rage to remorse.  The film has a plot that can find patrons among wider variety of audience as the theme of humanity is much a catholic one that transcends barriers.
Verdict: An intelligent fare with substance
